| About the Kuru Family
of Organisations
The Kuru Family of Organisations (KFO)
is an affiliated group of eight NGOs working in Botswana
and South Africa that has the common goal of empowering
the most vulnerable group of indigenous peoples in southern
Africa, namely the San, to take control over their own
destinies through a holistic process approach to development.
Through Letloa Trust, KFO also supports the Botswana
arm of the Working Group for Indigenous Minorities in
Southern Africa (WIMSA). KFO’s work currently
reaches 40% of the San in Botswana and 70% of the San
in South Africa..
Recognising that the San are often
integrated into other communities and have neighbours
from other tribes, KFO also works with other minority,
marginalised groups such as the Hambukushu, Wayei and
Herero.
Most of the KFO members were established
when the old Kuru Development Trust was devolved into
separate entities. Kuru Development Trust was formally
set up in 1986 but some projects had started three years
earlier so many of the KFO staff have years if not decades
of experience working in self help development. |
